Racism has been a societal issue that goes way beyond the old age. However, it is more likely to happen between Americans or Westerners. Racism between Asian countries is not that evident compared to what was mentioned.
Recently, the trend #CancelKorea ranked #1 on Twitter. This started when a Filipina TikTok “artist/influencer” Bella Poarch posted a video that shows her “Japanese Rising Sun” Tattoo.
This tattoo was used by the Japanese during World War II. This is where it all started.
Korean Netizens got offended by the tattoo. Let’s take a road trip back to history. In 1910, Korea got colonized by Japan. They were stripped of their diplomatic sovereignty and declared a protectorate of Japan until World War II ended in 1945.
Poarch apologized and said that she’ll have the tattoo removed or covered up. But it doesn’t end there. Koreans threw racial slurs to Filipinos, saying they are “Dark” and “Short”. While these are true, some Filipinos didn’t like the way these were said.
The Philippines is considered to have the largest fan base of Korean Pop or KPOP. This is why the #CancelKorea trend started.
Filipinos answered these racial slurs from the Koreans, calling them names, and calling out a lot of things especially their fondness of plastic surgery, and them not being able to speak English the way Filipino people do.
While this trend intends to raise the Filipino flag and to protect the Filipino pride, it received backlash from fellow Filipino, saying that if they want racism to stop, they shouldn’t be a racist, too.
This generation is much more educated when it comes to societal issues. And hopefully, in our generation, racism will finally stop.
